The rule book suggests - but doesn't mandate - a Value connecting you to another member of the crew. Or they could have a value reflecting their species or early upbringing. Look at their lifepath - the two Career Events they roll could represent formative moments that shaped how they behave as an officer. So, again, to use the example of "I Don't Start Fights, I Finish Them," the GM might offer you a Determination point if Foxy finds herself unable to drop a subject or withdraw from a conflict, to her detriment.Ĥ) Where does this Value come from? The best source of ideas for Values comes from the actual fiction about your character. The more open your Values are to a negative reading, the more easily you can mine Determination. So like in FATE I might describe Foxy Brown as a "Red Hot Mama" but that doesn't really make sense as a Value.Ģ) How will I use this positively in play? Like, for any given Virtue, ask yourself what situations could you reasonably expect to get a bonus from it? "I Don't Start Fights, I Finish Them" could probably be used pretty well in situations where she needs to stay cool (she doesn't shoot first) and also could be effective in a fight (when she fights, she fights decisively).ģ) How will I use this negatively in play? Remember, you recharge Determination with compels from the GM based on your Values. The ninth exercise, on Trill Characters, can be found here. The tenth exercise, on Bolian characters, can be found here. The eleventh exercise, on Human characters, can be found here. This is the twelfth entry in my thought exercise set for STA Character creation. I think the key thing with Values is to ask yourselfġ) What does this say about the character's beliefs, specifically? This is a bit different than an Aspect in Fate because it's not necessarily some intrinsic fact about the character, it's more about what motivates them inside their own head. Character Creation Thought Exercise 12 - Andorian. Is she impatient? In a hurry to get somewhere? Maybe she "Doesn't Have Time to Mess Around." If she's tough and pugnacious, but only messes with people who have it coming (in true Pam Grier fashion), then maybe something like "I Don't Start Fights, I Finish Them."
